The John Deere Classic is a professional golf tournament on the PGA Tour. It is played annually in July, the week before the British Open, at the TPC at Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois.
The tournament began as the Quad Cities Open in 1971 and was a "satellite event" on the PGA Tour. It became an official tour event in 1972. Title sponsors have included Ed McMahon (1974–79), Miller Brewing Company (1982–85), Hardee's (1986–94) and John Deere (since 1999).
From the event's inception in 1971 through 1974, it was played at Crow Valley Country Club in Davenport, Iowa. It then moved to Oakwood Country Club in Coal Valley, Illinois from 1975 to 1999. Since 2000, the event has been at the TPC at Deere Run in Silvis.
In 2005 and 2006, the tournament generated more media coverage because of the sponsor's exemptions given to teenager Michelle Wie. In 2005, the tournament's storyline also revolved around Sean O'Hair, whose win qualified him to play in the British Open the following week and was a significant part of his PGA Rookie of the Year season.

TPC Deere Run
"Our goal was to build an old-style, traditional golf course and I think we've captured that," says D.A. Weibring, PGA TOUR course designer and three-time champion of the Quad Cities tournament. "We wanted to create a course that had memorable holes with dramatic views of the rolling hills and vistas."
"My wife's reaction really embodies what we were hoping for - Kristy said she had a feeling of anticipation, of wondering what was coming next. She said each hole looked like another postcard."
TPC Deere Run features tree-lined fairways, several dramatic elevation changes and breathtaking views of the Rock River. It will be a stern 7,080-yard test for professional golfers from the championship tees.
Long before golfers began traveling to the gorgeous land now called TPC Deere Run, native Americans migrated there. They came to this western Illinois location for the bounty of wildlife, the proximity to the Rock River and for the natural beauty of rolling hills and wooded ravines.
Still today, visitors might see deer, birds or other wildlife that would have provided hunting opportunities for the native Americans hundreds of years ago.
In more recent times, the property became Friendship Farm, one of the top Arabian horse breeding operations in the U.S. As a result, the property was maintained in its most natural beauty and provided a near perfect setting for the property's destination today, a fine golf course that appears to have been here since, perhaps, native Americans called this area home.
